John Sinclair & His Blues Scholars
Fattening Frogs for Snakes: The Delta Sound Vol. One
(Okra-Tone/Rooster Blues)

Like the Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat, Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, and the Shaggs’ first album, these twisted hipster-blues lectures and crossroads-legend channelings by the graying White Panther will clear out the party in a hurry, and that’s just part of what’s good about them. They also educate like Peter Guralnick while challenging the exclusivity of the claim that professional extremists such as Peter Jennings and Eminem have laid to the male speaking voice. The song lengths (average: eight minutes) give the Blues Scholars time to mine their grooves. The church-raised background chicks respond to the call. Rating: Four Motor City Madmen out of five.
